Wombat:
Purpose of this modification is to replace the rubber pump on the washer pedal with a momentary switch that allows water to be fired at the windshield while ever the foot pedal pedal is depressed. It does not change the way the wipers work when you depress the foot pedal
Here is the foot pedal removed from the car
You have to unscrew the nylon nut / hose connector and pull out the rubber bellows / pump
This is what it looks like with the rubber thingy removed
Next step is to make up a right angled bracket for the switch. Dimensions will vary depending on what switch you use. Use a multimeter to make sure that the switch is positioned to activate after the wipers so that you can still tap the pedal to use it for on demand single wipe.
If you adapt the bracket to attach to the leg of the pump then you can raise it up and down to get the correct position before you fix it to the leg. You also need to twist the head of the bracket, where the switch mounts, so that it is square with the arm of the foot pump when it is pushed
To wire the switch up you need to:
- locate an ignition source (like the radio)
- run a wire from the swirch into the engine bay to the pump
Here is a simple wiring diagram that you can use. You might want to add a fuse into the circuit or you electronics wizards could use a relay and trigger the relay by earthing out pin 86 through the switch
The final stage is to add an electric pump to your washer bottle circuit. I am currently evaluating using the 68 washer bottle with a separate pump or installing a 68 bottle in the same place as the 69/70 (its a lot easier with a 3G alternator as you don't have a regulator on the radiator support). I'll update this bit later |
